Abstract

Photochemical air pollution was studied in the lower Great Lakes region of southern Ontario, Canada, using O//3 data for 1973-76 inclusive. The purpose of this study is to explore the sources and sinks of photochemical O//3 in the boundary layer. High O//3 concentrations in the boundary layer are correlated primarily with the several meteorological variables in warm seasons: pressure, temperature, radiation, wind speed and direction. Fluctuations of O//3 are highly dependent on the synoptic-, regional- and small-scale air flow at low levels. Particular emphasis is given to the long-range transport of O//3 and its precursors across the international boundary by relating the emission sources to the results of air-parcel trajectory analysis.
