Abstract

Multifunctional management development is not for every company, nor is it for every individual within a company. However, MFD can be a critical ingredient in overcoming the stagnation of long job tenures typical of today's delayered organizations. Moreover, MFD can be a powerful tool for enhancing managerial talent for the dynamic rigors of today's and tomorrow's competitive marketplace. This potential importance of MFD was reflected in a large worldwide study of CEOs conducted by Columbia University and Korn/Ferry International. Asked to describe the ideal preparation for their successors in the year 2000, over 69 percent of the respondents rated "experience in multiple functions" as important for the future leaders of their firms. We encourage companies to look systematically and creatively at this major avenue for managerial development. ?? 1992.
