High quality solid solution single crystals of (BaxSr1-x)TiO3 (BST) with any value of x can be pulled from a melt containing about 36 mol-% BaO/SrO and 64 mol-% TiO2. The low frequency dielectric behaviour resembles that of the respective ceramics. The character of phase transition changes from 1st to 2nd order when the SrTiO3-content exceeds around 50 mol-%. Accordingly the dielectric nonlinearity constant of the free crystal reverses its sign at that composition. © 1971.
