Abstract

A modified version of systematic desensitization therapy using in vivo stimuli and incorporating assertive confidence training was applied to persons suffering from severe sexual disorders. Physiological and subjective report measures of change were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the technique. This therapy was compared with a conventional psychoanalytically oriented group treatment and an untreated control group. The results indicated that the modified desensitization technique was significantly more successful in eliminating sexual dysfunctions and reducing associated sexual and social anxieties than the comparative conditions. The dependent variables measured correlated highly with each other in each group. © 1973.
