Abstract

Whey, preferably sweet whey, can be fed to all ruminants, it is a good source of protein, lactose and minerals. Considerable savings on feed ingredients can be achieved by its utilization, especially if transport costs from the processing plant to the farm are low. Recommended Dairy Intakes of liquid whey are tabulated; whey intake must be restricted in lactating dairy cows in order that sufficient DM can be ingested to support milk production. Whey intake was found to vary with temperature, greater vol. being consumed in the summer than in the winter, and to maintain a constant solids intake, it was necessary to concentrate the whey approx. 2-fold in the winter. This had the added advantage of reducing transport costs and improved the keeping quality of whey. Whey can be fed separately or in a complete ration, mixed with other feed ingredients. Excessive whey consumption can lead to whey bloat and manure handling problems.
