Abstract

The increasing population and human activities have led to a significant increase in the production of organic waste, especially from canteen waste. This poses environmental and health problems. This study aims to process organic waste in the form of leftover fruits and vegetables from the canteen into alternative energy, biogas, through the anaerobic process. The processing was carried out by mixing fruit and vegetable waste with water and Effective Microorganisms-4 (EM4) bacteria in a ratio of 1:1:0.1. The mixture was then fermented for 30 days under anaerobic conditions. The results of the study showed that fruit and vegetable waste have good potential to be converted into biogas. The addition of EM4 in the fermentation process has proven to increase biogas production. The biogas produced can be used as an energy source for cooking or lighting. In addition, the by-product of the fermentation process in the form of organic fertilizer can improve soil quality. The results of this study indicate that the anaerobic process with the addition of EM4 is an effective method for processing fruit and vegetable waste from the canteen into biogas, while also providing benefits in the form of organic fertilizer.
