Abstract

The effect of Equisetum Arvense (EA) on wound healing in rabbits was investigated and compared to commonly used povidone iodine and sodium chloride. Twelve rabbits were used as material. A total of 36 full-thickness skin wounds 3 from each of 12 rabbits were created on their dorsal aspect. Postoperatively, the wound surfaces were macroscopically examined and the effects of different shapes and sites of wound on the healing process and the rates of wound expansion, contraction and epithelization. Biopsy specimens that were collected on the 4, 7, 10 and 14th Postoperative Days (PODs) were evaluated according to several histopathologic parameters such as the neutrophil, macrophage infiltration, fibroblast and fibrosyctes. © Medwell Journals, 2011.
