Abstract

Authenticators are widely used to protect payment messages againts active attack. They produce a number, sometimes called a ‘MAC’ which is a function of the whole message and a secrety key. the earlier name for them in banking was ‘test-key’, but this obsolescent term is confusing to cryptographers.
