Abstract

Complex injuries of the tarsus consist of combined osseous and/or ligamentous lesions in various locations (anatomical-functional) with accompanying closed or open soft tissue injuries. Because of a high incidence of polytraumatized patients, timing, strategy and technique in the operative management of foot lesions are essential in consideration of reconstruction or amputation. In particular closed soft tissue with decollement and compartment syndrome tends to be underestimated concerning the potential of posttraumatic functional loss and deformation. However, the correct performance of operative osseous and ligamentous reconstruction is also a requirement of preservation of anatomy, stability and function of the foot. © Springer-Verlag 2012.
