Abstract

The deformation behavior of the coherent β′′′ phase in a Mg-Nd alloy and β′ phase in a Mg-Y alloy were determined by examining the aged microstructures both before and after deformation using high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy. Both phases were sheared by dislocations with <a> basal slip in Mg-Nd and basal <a> and non-basal <c+a> or <a> slip in Mg-Y.
