Considers the effect of density stratification and bottom friction in analysis of large scale low frequency wind driven fluctuations over the continental shelf and slope. Presents the model equations, boundary conditions and specifications of bottom stress (taking surface gravity waves into account). Examines analytical theory, near the barotropic limit, and discusses apparent bottom trapping of the baroclinic fluctuations. Derives a criterion for the structure of that response. Numerical studies focus on the sensitivity of the response in the COD (Coastal Ocean Dynamics Experiment) region to various parameters. Effect of surface gravity waves on the large scale flow is discussed. (C.J.U.)
