Urban floods are currently a problem all over the world. The damage can be enormous, thus it is necessary to implement preventive measures to mitigate this problem. The increasing urbanization of permeable surfaces and the climate changes can lead to the occurrence of flooding. Drainage systems may not be prepared to the increasing of flow caused by these phenomena, therefore flooding may occur. Flood risk maps are used to classify the likelihood of flooding and quantify its consequence. In 2007 the European Union issued Directive 2007/60/CE, that requires Member States to assess if there are risk of flooding. The goals of this article are to create maps of floodable areas and flood risk maps for the Zona Central catchment in Coimbra. In order to achieve these objectives, precipitation events with different return periods were simulated and, based on the results obtained, flood risk maps were created. Those maps gave a clear indication about what areas and buildings are most likely to suffer considerable damages in case of flooding.
