This paper describes a strategy for successfully implementing the teaching portfolio in higher education institutions in Japan. The teaching portfolio has gained recognition in Japan in the last few years as an effective instrument for improving and showcasing teaching performance. It is well known that the implementation process is very important for successful integration of new practices. This paper presents a practical implementation strategy that includes planning the appropriate structure of the contents and processes of the portfolio, providing comprehensive information, and supporting networking among institutions in order to administer this strategy effectively. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
