Abstract

Seventy-four samples of subaerial algae were collected at 36 sites from castle and church walls, fences and buildings throughout the Republic of Ireland. Samples were taken from brick, iron, limestone, mortar, wood, stone and stucco walls. High relative humidity and moderate temperatures were relatively constant at the sampling sites and light intensities varied from completely dark rooms to wall areas exposed to direct sunlight for several hours each day. Fifty taxa of Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Chrysophyta and Bacillariophyta were cultured and identified. © 1975 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
