Abstract

The article reviews China's rapid rise in the world economy over the last two decades and its implications for global economic governance and, in particular, for China's growing tensions with the United States. Relevant milestones such as China's entry into the World Trade Organization (wto), the subprime crisis, and the covid-19 pandemic are examined. The transition from the trade war between the two powers to a conflict for dominance of the main technologies of the 21st century is documented. The article ends with a reflection on the possible impacts of this conflict on the global economic scene.
