Abstract

As our review this month points out, disturbances in intestinal immunity and other protective mechanisms may play an important part in the causation ofsome inflammatory diseases. Many examples of small bowel disease and associated arthritis spring to mind. It is salutory, therefore, to remind ourselves of these mechanisms and the function of the intestinal epithelial barrier.
