Abstract

This article presents a speech given by Alfredo Mires Ortiz, an expert on rural libraries, at a conference in Medellín, Colombia, on November 28, 2016. He comments on the importance of libraries in the promotion of reading and discusses the value of reading throughout human history. The role of rural libraries is also examined.
