Abstract
The nucleotide sequence of the gene speC, encoding streptococal pyrogenic exotoxin type C (SPE C), was determined. The gene encoded a mature protein of 208 amino acids, with a calculated molecular weight of 24,354. The mature amino acid sequence of SPE C was analyzed for homology with the amino acid sequences of streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin type A, the staphylococcal enterotoxins, and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1. Of these, SPE C shared the greatest amount of homology with streptococcal exotoxin type A.
