Abstract
We analyze the specimens used by Cuvier to describe in 1806 his «mastodonte à dents étroites», named by him Mastodon angustidens later in 1817. Some of them - molars and partial molars from Simorre (Gers) - were already mentioned by Réaumur and Daubenton during the 18th century. What is considered as the original type series of Gomphotherium angustidens (CUVIER, 1817) is presented and newly interpreted.
