An exploratory, cross-section, descriptive research was carried out on self-medication in the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia, in order to better understand this public health problem. Preliminary information was obtained as basis for future work on this subject and as a way to promote an appropriate use of drugs. It was found that 97% of persons in this university self-medicate despite the fact that 88% of them know the risks of such conduct. The role of Pharmaceutical Chemists in educating the community to avoid self-medication is emphasized.
