The Schwann cells, the glial cells of the peripheral nervous system, support the neuronal functions in several ways. Schwann cells are implied infunctions like metabolicaxonal support, facilitation of conduction and regeneration of damaged axons. In this paper we briefly review the origin of these cells, their development, morphological features, proliferation, mechanism of myelin formation and the importance of the relationship between axons and Schwann cells. At the end of this review, we present the most common diseases which affect the survival and normal function of these cells.
