Abstract

Summary

Science has made great progress in understanding the machinery of life, but the ultimate test of our understanding is whether we are able to build something that functions the same way. Researchers have identified building blocks and modular principles in protein evolution and in self-organising patterns, enabling them to create new functional units. Michael Gross reports.
