Voluntary motor control requires circuits in the brain to develop synchronously with spinal motor circuitry. In this issue of Developmental Cell, Reimer etal. (2013) demonstrate that this process is coordinated in zebrafish: dopamine released from descending projections modulates formation of motor neurons by attenuating the response of progenitors to Shh signaling. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
