Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the dietary profile and nutritional status of 30 patients with coeliac syndrome (CS; 12 women, 8 men and 10 children) from Ludhiana City, Punjab, India [date not given]. The mean height of women, men and children with CS was 157.78, 160.48 and 95.56 cm, respectively; while the respective mean body weight was 44.17, 46.58 and 14.13 kg. Both height and weight were less than the standard values for Indian people. The mean intake of cereals was 114.65, 102.13 and 75.83 for women, men and children, respectively; for pulse intake, the respective values were 54.66, 58.36 and 65.95 g. Pulse intake was significantly high in children, whereas intake of all other food groups (such as milk/milk products, root and tuber crops, leafy and other vegetables, and fruits) in all 3 groups was significantly lower (P<0.01). On the basis of the recommeded dietary allowances, energy intake was low in all 3 groups. Protein intake was adequate in women and children, but not in men. Carbohydrate and fibre intake was significantly lower (P<0.01) in all 3 groups. Fat intake was significantly lower (P<0.01) in men and children. CS patients were using only maize flour and besan to make chapattis, and were not taking any in-between meals due to lack of availability of gluten-free foods.
