Abstract

Aurora results from the interaction of charged particles from the solar wind with molecules and atoms in the atmosphere. How, where and when this happens determines much of the structure and appearance of aurora. ASK - auroral structure and kinetics - is an instrument that captures high-resolution images of aurora at specific wavelengths, related to auroral height and particle energy. ASK is already revealing unprecedented details of fine structure and temporal variation. © 2007 Royal Astronomical Society.
