Discourse of the Collective Subject regarding Education of Health in the Aging Process: A descriptive study

Abstract

Aim: To understand the experiences of health professionals whose work focuses on health education aimed at the elderly in Family Health Strategy, and identify successful actions. Method: This is qualitative research, with an exploratory and descriptive approach, performed with twelve professionals that work or worked with education in health focused on the elderly in Family Health Units, in the city of Campina Grande, in the Brazilian state of Paraíba. The data was collected from April to May 2010, and then submitted to the technique of analysis called Discourse of the Collective Subject. At all times, this study followed the standards set by the Resolution 196/96. Results: From the information obtained, three main ideas arose, which revealed countless fragilities found in elderly health care, as well as demonstrations of strength and self-determination by the professionals in order to go the extra mile. Conclusion: It is necessary to improve and invest in professionals and instruments/methodologies used by these professionals, as well as to motivate the use of alternative therapeutic practices.
