Abstract

Initiatives of sustainable development require acceptance and participation of the people. This is crucial for Melaka state in Malaysia which wants to be a Green Technology City State by 2020 by embarking on various green initiatives. This paper evaluates the people’s acceptance and participation of these programs. Observations, responses from 152 samples in Melaka Tengah, and in depth interview of officers were analysed. The study suggests that respondents are aware of the green city’s vision, mostly from social media. The popular initiatives are Melaka Without Plastic Bag and Polystyrene, Green Transportation and 2+1 Recycling Program. However, the level of people’s involvement in the green initiative introduced is relatively low. Keywords: Green Technology Sustainable City (GTSC); sustainable development; public’s acceptance and participation; Melaka eISSN: 2398-4287 © 2018.
