In 1913 wittgenstein criticized a book russell was writing so severely that russell abandoned it unfinished. it was as russell himself later put it, an event of decisive importance in his life. the criticism was directed at russell's theory of judgment but had wider ramifications for russell's logic, especially the theory of types. the paper explains what the criticism was and why russell was right to feel 'paralysed' by it.
