© 2016 The current evidence is that heart failure units constitute a good quality care strategy with high cost-effectiveness standards; they have an impact on quality of life, increased survival and reduced rehospitalisation and costs for a disorder which greatly affects public health. This is why this document provides a definition of the unit, its elements and strategies for its development, along with strategic objectives and how to overcome opportunity and access constraints, based on the structure of a multidisciplinary team and the physical, human and technological resources of the unit, focusing efforts on high risk patients and constructing paths of integration with primary healthcare in order to monitor stable patients and ensure them good end-of-life care.
