Abstract

As poverty levels in Africa continue to worsen, new evidence indicates those getting poorest fastest are women. While reflective of the continent-wide economic decline, the impoverishment of women is also due to governmental neglect of women, drastic cuts in social spending through structural adjustment programs, and cultural denigration of women's role in society. -Author
