This work examines, from a comparative perspective, the perceptions of parliamentary elites from MERCOSUR member countries regarding the armed forces as well as security and defence issues. In light of the growing cooperation in the field of security, it explores values and convictions among political elites so as to find signs of the development towards a regional security community in the south of Latin America. Taking into account the results of two empirical research projects on parliamentary elites, the article identifies similarities and discrepancies between deputies and senators in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay and discusses possible consequences for the future cooperation in security matters.
