This article engages with the topic of the humanity of indigenous American peoples (16th and 17th century) in an attempt to show the strained relations between preserving the compact nature of humanity and cultural diversity. We have focused on the missionary's discourse, linguistic incommensurability, and intercultural communication problems, so as to explain the reasons for the hesitant opinions of the missionaries about indigenous people that may suggest a different understanding to such topics. The article mostly resorts to the testimony of the friars in New Spain.
