Abstract

The first Polish Diabetes Society (Diabetes Poland) guidelines on the management of diabetic patients were published in 2005. Since then, they have been updated annually to provide best care for diabetic patients based on the state-of-the-art knowledge. The present article summarizes changes in the nutritional recommendations for diabetic patients that have been introduced over the last 15 years. We analysed both general recommendations regarding the goals and strategies of nutritional treatment, and specific recommendations regarding the intake of major food components including carbohydrates, protein, and fat. We also analysed changes in the recommendations regarding additional dietary constituents such as salt, alcohol, and vitamin and mineral supplements.
