Exploring the dynamics of data sharing in open science among Chinese scholars: An integrated PMT and TPB approach

Abstract

Data sharing is request under open science policy. The inconsistent juxtaposition of positive attitudes toward open communication science (OCS) with low levels of commitment to data sharing is underinvestigated. This study explores the factors influencing data sharing by integrating protection motivation theory (PMT) with the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Specifically, this research draws attention to (1) the influence of six predicting variables (perceived benefit, perceived threat, response cost, OCS efficacy, subjective norm, and attitude) on behavioral intention and (2) the role of behavioral intention as a mediator in the relationships between these predicting variables and actual behaviors. Our survey of 351 Chinese communication scholars showed that the integrated PMT and TPB model successfully explained how individuals commit themselves to data sharing, and six predicting variables proposed can provide insights for research institutes and policy-makers to promote data sharing in the future.
