Article 66(3) of the Rome Statute sets the standard for conviction in the International Criminal Court. The Court must be convinced of the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt. This paper deals with the effects that this standard may produce in the type of cases the Court processes. Indeed, it is argued that the reasonable doubt standard may fulfil various purposes which will be developed in this paper, such as reinforcing the search for the truth; preserving the memory of victims; distributing error; showing the operability of the right of presumption of innocence; producing sociological effects in the international community; and contributing to the restoration of the international legal order which was broken by the offence.
