Abstract

Hepatopathology of infection by Fasciola hepatica in cattle, buffaloes and sheep Abstract A histopathological study on hepatic lesions caused by Fasciola hepatica has been carried out three domestic ruminants: cattle, buffalo’s and sheep. Liver samples were processed by routine histological methods. The staining procedures included hematoxilin-eosine, Schorr (triple staining), Mallory (triple staining) and toluidine blue. The most frequent lesions found were the following ones: parasite sections inside the billiary ducts, portal system fibrosis and billiary duct hyperplasia. Lymphocytes, plasmocytes, eosinophils and neutrophils, characteristics of a chronic disease, were found in bovines and bubalines. The presence of eosinophils in sheeps was characteristic of the initial phase of a chronic fascioliasis.
