Soil has an important role in the work of a civil construction. Soil serves to withstand building loads and other loads. Then all these loads must be taken into account, so that the soil can continue the load into the soil to a certain depth. The purpose of this study was to determine how the effect of sand added with clay on the value of free compressive strength. This research was conducted experimentally in the laboratory. The percentage of sand mixture used was 0%, 5%, 7.5%, 10% and 12.5%. Based on the AASTHO classification, soil originating from the Bukit Rawi area, Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan, is classified as clayey in group A-7-6 (11), sand originating from the Palangka Raya City area, Central Kalimantan is classified as A-3 with The most dominant type of material is fine sand and the assessment as a subgrade material is good. And according to the USCS soil classification, the soil belongs to the CL group (inorganic clay with low to moderate plasticity). And sand originating from the Palangka Raya City area, Central Kalimantan is included in the classification of coarse-grained soil. Visually, the sand is gray in color and contains a small amount of fine grains belonging to the SW group sand. Based on the test of the free compressive strength of clay with a mixture of sand resulted in a decrease in the value of the free compressive strength (qu) and the value of the shear strength (cu) from the original soil to a mixture variation of 12.5% in clay soil. The value of the free compressive strength (qu) of the original soil = 0.805 kg/cm2, the value of the shear strength (cu) = 0.4025 kg/cm2. While the greatest decrease occurred in the variation of the 12.5% sand mixture, the value of free compressive strength (qu) = 0.485 kg/cm2 and the value of shear strength (cu) = 0.2425 kg/cm2. Decreased value = 0.320 kg/cm2 with a percentage = 46.58%.
