Weaving Prosperity: Problems of Handloom Workers in Karnataka and Leveraging Geographical Indications to Enhance their Socio-Economic Condition

Abstract

This study examines the socio-economic circumstances of handloom workers in Karnataka, a state renowned for its rich cultural legacy and economic environment. It investigates the historical development, economic influence, present condition and problems of the handloom industry, emphasising the widespread existence of informal employment arrangements, insufficient remuneration, and restricted availability of social security benefits. It also examines the current social security systems provided to handloom workers, including restricted health insurance and pension plans, and identifies their deficiencies and inadequacies. This research focusses on analysing the Registered Handloom Geographical Indications (GIs) of Karnataka, such as Ilkal Sarees, and explores the role of GIs in safeguarding and promoting traditional handloom goods. It assesses the influence of geographical indications (GIs) on employment prospects, educational and training assistance, brand worth and product distinctiveness, export possibilities and revenue generation, skill enhancement and innovation, community advancement, women’s empowerment, and the improvement of social security through GIs. Furthermore, it finds inadequacies in current legislations that impact the handloom industry, emphasising the need for changes to more effectively assist handloom workers and use Geographical Indications (GIs).
