Abordagem Fisioterapêutica na Esclerose Lateral Amiotrófica: Artigo de Atualização

Abstract

Introduction. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a neurodegenerative condition affecting primarily and severely the cortical motor system. In most cases the cause of the disease is unknown, and it is invariably fatal, with enormous impact on patients, family members, caregivers and professionals involved in the treatment. Objective. The objective of this review is to report the state of the art of research on the physiotherapy treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Method. Therefore, a literature search was conducted on the SciELO, LILACS and MEDLINE databases and the most relevant articles on the topic were included. Results. The results showed that physiotherapy plays a relevant role in the treatment of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Conclusion. Through physiotherapy treatment methods it is possible to improve quality of life and prolong survival of these patients, particularly with therapeutic exercises and respiratory support.
