Abstract
High-resolution seismic stratigraphic investigation of the Juparan˜ a Lake, the largest lacustrine body in the lakes system of Doce River lower course (State of Esp´ırito Santo, Southeastern Brazil), was performed, giving the information to discuss the Quaternary lacustrine evolution. Two seismic sequences were identified. The older seismic sequence is characterized by a reflection free pattern, associated with Holocene alluvial sedimentation. The younger seismic sequence is characterized by a parallel pattern of seismic reflections and was associated with lacustrine deposition after the damming of the “old Juparan˜ isopach map of the younger seismic sequence documents an irregular distribution of the lacustrine deposits in three distinct depocenters with relatively abrupt limits suggesting a neotectonic control on the lacustrine evolution.
