Abstract

Basic thermodynamic concepts related to the initial stages of first-order phase transitions are defined in terms of electrochemical quantities. Theoretical expressions are derived for the nucleation work and for the size of the critical nucleus revealing the supersaturation dependence of these most important physical quantities.
