Abstract

The southern waters of Java was known as one of upwelling locations in Indonesia. Research about of upwelling in this waters has been done by some researchers. However, research about of the atmospheric aspects during upwelling is still slightly. This research was conducted to understand the conditions of zonal wind during upwelling in the southern waters of Java at normal and ENSO conditios. The data consists of sea surface temperature from 1984-2013 and zonal wind from 1988-2011 obtained form Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Center – National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The method used in this research was description analysis. The results showed that zonal wind in the southern waters of Java was dominant move toward the west. Upwelling in the southern waters of West Java, Central Java and East Java occured when zonal wind moves westward continuously more than 2 months, greater speed of 5m/sec and small velocity fluctuations. There was lag time about 1-1.5 months between zonal wind blow parallel to the coast upwelling process. Upwelling intensity was strongest and longest occurred in the southern waters of East Java. Indonesian Throughflow has an important role on intensityincreasin of upwlling in the south of East Java. Intensity of upwelling during El Niño period more powerful, but during La Niña period is weaker than normal conditions.
