Abstract

Nowadays, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) has been used for high conformality, high normal tissue protection, therefore high therapeutic ratio in routine clinical treatment. The success of IMRT depends on the implementation of correct radiation dose. As a result, image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) methods were developed which regulates the treatment position with two or three-dimensional imaging tecniques in the treatment room during treatment. However, IGRT can correct only organ motion and set-up errors, this method may not be sufficient in cases with large changes in anatomy. Also, IGRT do not include treatment planning and as a result potential modification of dose delivered to the patient. Thus, ART; as a forward step for IGRT, was needed. The purpose of ART is; to equalize planned dose distribution with planning optimal dose distribution by measuring changes in the treatment process. © 2013 Association of Oncology.
