Currently, illegal hunting is considered a threat to the fauna of many protected areas in Brazil. This study aimed to characterize the type of hunting that occurs in the Iguaçu National Park, the most hunted animals, and the cities with the highest number of hunters booked. For this, the documents pro- duced by the inspection team of the park, from January 1999 to April 2009, were evaluated. We found out that the majority of hunters hunt mainly in groups of three to four people and the most used tech- niques are: “light rifle”, waiting hunting, occasional hunting, and margin hunting. The animals predomi- nantly slaughtered were deer (Mazama spp. – 26%), agoutis (Dasyprocta azarae - 24.5%), and dove species juriti (Patagioenas picazuro) and carijó (Leptotila verreauxi – together with 23%). Most hunters were from Capitão Leônidas Marques and Capanema (each with 27.5%), and Céu Azul (14%).
