Abstract

In this study, the planning and application processes and the related problems of use of bicycle as a worldwide accepted transportation mode, are examined in the case of Konya, Turkey. The bicycle plans for cities and the role of bicycle transportation in transport plans in Turkey have been examined in the paper; where the parts referring to bicycle transport in transportation plans are very limited. The position of bicycle transport among other alternative transport modes has been researched, the applications in Turkey and worldwide have been examined and the complementary role of bicycle transport along with vehicular and pedestrian and other has been emphasized. In the study, the application procedures of the existing plans related with bicycle have been researched; the applied proposals related to the use of bicycle and the reasons behind unapplied suggestions in transportation plans have been evaluated by examining the historical advance of bicycle transportation in Konya. The differences between the proposed and implemented decisions have been determined. In conclusion, by means of both the local and the central governments' efforts and by creating and elevating a common bicycle culture among people, it can be said that bicycle transportation can be an attractive transport mode in Turkey, as in other developed countries.
