Abstract
Thick layers of a previously unknown volcanic formation were discovered in various places in the centre of the Chaîne des Puys. The new tephra has a polygenic composition with phreatomagmatic features. The fresh magma is trachy-andesite (latite), with phenocrysts of amphibole, pyroxene and feldspar. The deposits were dated by means of thermoluminescence in 4 distinct places, with a mean age of 13.6 ± 1.0 ka. Mapping the deposits allowed assuming that they were emitted by the north-east crater of Montchié volcano. The latter was previously described as a basaltic strombolian volcano, with several craters. Tephrostratigraphy of the deposits on the Montchié itself suggest that they were ejected at the end of the volcanic activity. This conclusion is corroborated by LiDAR survey data, which enable to infer the relative chronology of the craters. Montchié volcano appears to be less simple than previously assumed. The eruption identified in the present work provides a new milestone for the complex formation of the centre of Chaîne des Puys during the Upper Pleistocene.
