Abstract
An optimization strategy for a fiber-optic ammonia sensor is presented. This strategy considers the various experimental parameters that affect both steady-state and dynamic response characteristics. The use of multiple Indicators to enhance the steady-state performance of the sensor Is demonstrated. A simplex optimization routine has been developed to Identify the best combination of two Indicators for a particular analyte concentration range. The optimization strategy Is Illustrated by developing a sensor for wastewater analysis. In addition, response characteristics of the resulting fiber-optic sensor are directly compared to those of the conventional potentlometric ammonia electrode. The fiber-optic sensor Is suitable for wastewater analyses, and it compares well with the conventional electrode system. In comparison to the electrode, the fiber-optic sensor possesses equivalent sensitivity, similar response times, and superior recovery times. © 1988, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
