Abstract

This article focuses on the use of glucagon-like-peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), such as tirzepatide and semaglutide, in obesity treatment and emphasizes the necessity of integrating lifestyle support to optimize long-term health outcomes. While GLP-1RAs have demonstrated significant weight loss and benefits for cardiovascular and renal health, effective obesity care requires addressing nutritional challenges—including protein, fiber, hydration, and micronutrient needs—and promoting physical activity, particularly resistance training, to preserve muscle mass and function. The article highlights the importance of general practitioners (GPs) providing holistic, person-centered support that considers social determinants of health and environmental factors to ensure equitable access and sustained behavioral change. It also underscores the need for ongoing medication review and patient counseling about potential weight regain after cessation of GLP-1RA therapy.
