Abstract

In the current study to combine the high biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite (HA) with the positive effect on bone formation of boron (B), production of B doped HA by using acid-base method was aimed. The effects of the B contents used in the synthesis stage and also the effects of the sintering temperatures on phase formation, phase stability, sinterability, densification and mechanical properties (compressive strength and microhardness) were investigated. The experimental results verified that B doped HA powders were obtained after sintering stage. It was determined that for the samples, synthesized using different B contents pressed into pellet form and then sintered consecutively, density, microhardness and compressive strength values increases with the sintering temperature. Increase in the B content used in the synthesis stage affects the mechanical properties negatively; as the B content increases from 0 wt.% to 2 wt.%, density and microhardness values of the samples decrease. Density, microhardness and compressive strength of the B doped HA samples can be controlled to a certain degree by adjusting the B content and/or sintering temperature.
