MISELI: An inclusive article selection method

Abstract

Purpose: This study offers the researcher a method of selecting articles using low-cost technological tools, accelerating the process for systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis. The method is based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 statement under the acronym for inclusive method of literature selection (método inclusivo de seleção de literatura [MISELI]). Originality/value: The method is inclusive and can work with multiple databases, presenting a collection strategy that enables the search for important articles that may not be indexed in the most requested databases or even because the academy has not yet recognized them by the number of citations. We highlight that our paper is just one small piece of the big construction of sustainable development goal 4 (SDG 4), and we provided insights into more pieces of knowledge. Design/methodology/approach: The method deduplicates articles, pre-sents a technique for cutting citation numbers, treats quality articles below the cutoff line, applies inclusion and exclusion criteria and allows for the use of backward (for articles that were cited by the selected arti-cles) and forward (for articles that cited the selected articles) tech-niques. Findings: Although they are mostly in the public domain, this article grouped the tools in a flowchart form to serve as a guide for article selection, considering the requirements of high-impact journals, bringing speed and better quality to research. At the end, an example of the application of the method is presented. Main considerations/conclusions: The tutorial and the support of technological tools soften the researchers’ work by motivating and allowing them to focus their efforts on the analysis demands of the collected material.
